About This Tour

Three days on K’gari is the perfect length to uncover its coastal icons and inland wonders. With a personalised itinerary aligned to the low tides on 75 Mile Beach, K’gari’s eastern highway, you’ll enjoy safe and scenic driving to some of the island’s most unforgettable spots. Coastal Highlights: Cruise past the haunting Maheno Shipwreck and the vibrant Coloured Sands at the Pinnacles. Cool off with a swim in the fresh waters of Eli Creek before heading north to Indian Head, where dramatic views and the Champagne Pools offer the ultimate island escape. Inland Beauty: Be enchanted by the crystal-clear waters of Lake McKenzie and the emerald beauty of Lake Wabby. Wander through the ancient rainforest at Central Station, where towering ferns line the path to the peaceful Basin Lake—a magical walk worth every step. Safety Briefing: 8:15am*, for the 10:30*am barge. Return barge departs at 2:30*pm (*times are subject to change and will be confirmed at the time of booking.)

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — K’gari Adventure (Hervey Bay to K'gari)

Make your way to the Fraser Dingo Depot at 6 Southern Cross Circuit, Urangan, arriving in time for your mandatory 4WD safety briefing at 8:15am. This 1-hour session is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience on K’gari and includes advise and tips on putting together your personal 3 day itinerary based around low tide on 75 beach. If you're leaving your hire car at the depot, please park it on the street and head to reception. A staff member will take care of parking once you've completed check-in. Note: If you're travelling with children under 15, please refer to the special briefing instructions provided. After your briefing, make your way to River Heads for your pre-booked 10:30am barge departure to K’gari. You’ll arrive at Kingfisher Bay Resort, where your adventure officially begins. The first day of exploration wraps up at K’gari Beach Resort, your home base for the next two nights. Settle in, relax, and get ready for more island exploring tomorrow. Day 2 — K’gari Exploration

(Suggested itinerary ideas only. A driving plan will be based on low tides and discussed at your safety briefing) Start your day with breakfast at McKenzie’s on 75 before setting off to explore the wonders of K’gari. Your 3-day itinerary will be timed with the low tides along 75 Mile Beach, K’gari’ s stunning eastern coastline, giving you the freedom to drive north and uncover its most iconic sights. Coastal Highlights: Cruise along the beach to discover the haunting beauty of the Maheno Shipwreck and the vibrant hues of the Coloured Sands at the Pinnacles. Take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters of Eli Creek, then continue your adventure all the way to Indian Head, where panoramic views and nearby Champagne Pools await. Note: No travel beyond Indian Head. Inland Beauty Venture inland to experience the serene magic of Lake McKenzie and the emerald waters of Lake Wabby. Wander through the lush rainforest at Central Station, where ancient ferns line the trails leading to the tranquil Basin Lake, a hidden gem perfect for a peaceful walk. Day 3 — K’gari Farwell & return to Hervey Bay

Check-out: Before10:00am Begin your last morning with a breakfast at McKenzie’s on 75, soaking in the serenity of K’gari one final time. Use the remaining hours to explore any hidden gems or revisit your favourite spots before making your way to Kingfisher Bay Resort Wharf. Be sure to make your way back to Kingfisher Bay Resort Wharf by 2:00pm to check in for your pre-booked 2:30pm barge. This ensures a smooth and stress-free departure from the island. Once you arrive back at River Heads, head to the Fraser Dingo depot to wrap up your unforgettable three-day adventure.

Driving Information

This is a 4WD Hire experience — you drive the 4WD yourself. Please read the driving requirements below before you book.

  • Valid open manual/automatic driver licence (P2 or full). International visitors need their licence in English or an International Driving Permit.
  • K’gari is sand-only 4WD driving. No prior 4WD experience is needed for tag-along tours — your guide leads the way and briefs the convoy.
  • Zero alcohol/drug tolerance for all drivers, and standard Queensland road rules apply on the island.

The furthest north you can go on 75 Mile Beach is Indian Head, and the furthest south is Dili Village. (The 3-day limit is 280km) OFF LIMITS: Waddy Point – Orchid Beach – Western Beaches and western beach camp zones are off limits – Hook Point and further south than Dili Village Minimum Hire Age Drivers must be 25 years or over to hire a 4WD. Note: Bookings with adults 23 years and over with only 1 driver over 25yrs will be considered on a case-by-case request, please contact Real Adventure Group to discuss these bookings. Travelling with Children (4-14yrs) By QLD Law children to the age of 8yrs must be seated in a child car restraint. Child restraint: If you have children under 7 it is the legal requirement that they are secured in a child restraint! Please ensure you have let us know so we can arrange for the bolts to be secured in the vehicle! We provide the bolts but please note that the proper installation and use of the child restraint is your responsibility. We also hire booster seats starting from $30 per day (the kind that is secure with a seatbelt only for children over 4), let us know if you need to hire one. Children and the safety briefing: Children under 15 years of age and over 6 years of age can NOT sit in during the safety briefing, we require them to wait outside while parents are going through the instruction. Our office staff will oversee them while they complete a quiet activity. Children under 6 years of age need to be minded by one of the parents off-site as they are too young to be supervised by our office staff. If both parents want to drive - please let us know before the safety session and we can offer some suggestions BOND All vehicle rentals require an approved credit card security bond of AU$2500.00* before the vehicle can be released to the hirer. (Please note that we do not accept debit cards as a security bond). *Clients taking out the Ultimate Dingo Cover below will have a reduced bond of $1,000.00. INSURANCE Standard insurance is included in the hire, this included insurance has an excess of AU$12,000.00. Clients may choose one of the following Fraser Dingo Excess Reduction Covers (ECR). ECR is an optional excess reduction that reduces the hirer’s financial responsibility for accidental damage or theft involving the rental vehicle. ERC is not an insurance product; it is a contractual risk waiver. Payment for the ERC is direct to Fraser Dingo, taken at pick up. ECR OPTIONS AVAILABLE: •Essential Dingo Cover – $0/day, $12,000 excess, $2,500 bond, CTP insurance only (no excess reduction). •Enhanced Dingo Cover – $50/day, $2,500 excess, $2,500 bond, excess reduction + Max Trax recovery boards. •Ultimate Dingo Cover – $75/day, $1,000 excess, $1,000 bond, excess reduction + Max Trax recovery boards + windscreen & tyre cover.
