What to Pack for K'gari (Fraser Island)
A no-nonsense packing list for K'gari, whether you're doing a day tour or staying a few nights.
K'gari (Fraser Island) is a natural, remote environment with limited shops and patchy phone reception, so a little preparation goes a long way. Here's a practical packing list.
The essentials (every trip)
- Sun protection: High-SPF sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses — there's little shade on the beach.
- Swimwear and a quick-dry towel: You'll want to swim at Lake McKenzie and float down Eli Creek.
- Reef-safe insect repellent: Useful around the lakes and rainforest.
- Refillable water bottle: Stay hydrated, especially in warmer months.
- Comfortable footwear: Thongs or sandals for the beach, plus closed shoes for walking tracks.
- Light rain jacket: Weather can change quickly.
- Camera or phone: Download maps offline before you arrive.
For multi-day trips
- Layers for cool nights, particularly in winter.
- A small daypack for lakes and short walks.
- Personal toiletries and any medications.
- A power bank — charging options are limited.
- Cash for small purchases where card isn't available.
If you're self-driving or on a tag-along
- Recovery basics if not supplied (check with your operator) and appropriate footwear for soft sand.
- Food and drinking water for the group if it's not included.
- Rubbish bags — take everything out with you.
Leave these behind
Don't bring anything that encourages dingoes near people — keep all food sealed and packed away. Feeding dingoes is illegal and dangerous. Check what your specific tour includes (meals, park fees, equipment) on the tour page before you pack.
