K'gari 4WD Driving Guide (Fraser Island)
Driving on K'gari is genuinely challenging. This guide covers permits, sand driving, tides and the safety basics before you self-drive.
K'gari (Fraser Island) has no sealed roads — it's all soft sand and beach highway. Self-driving is hugely rewarding but genuinely demanding, and getting bogged is common for the inexperienced. If you're planning to drive yourself, read this first. If you're not confident, a tag-along tour or guided tour is the safer choice.
You'll need the right vehicle and permits
- A proper 4WD: High-clearance with low-range is essential. Two-wheel-drives and soft-roaders can't cope with the sand.
- A Vehicle Access Permit (VAP): Required to drive on the island, arranged through Queensland's national parks service before you go.
- Camping permits: Needed if you're staying at national park campgrounds.
Sand driving basics
- Lower your tyre pressures: Reducing pressure gives grip on soft sand — follow current local advice and re-inflate before sealed roads.
- Keep momentum: Steady, smooth acceleration works better than sudden speed or braking.
- Follow existing tracks: Stay in established wheel ruts where possible.
- Carry recovery gear: Traction boards, a shovel and a snatch strap — and know how to use them.
Tides rule the beach
75 Mile Beach is a road, and it's governed by the tide. Drive around low tide and avoid the beach near high tide, when soft sand and washouts make it hazardous. Check the tide times daily and plan your movements around them.
Safety on the island
- Watch for oncoming vehicles, walkers and aircraft — planes land on the beach.
- Beware of washouts, creek crossings and soft patches near the dunes.
- Only swim in the freshwater lakes and creeks; the surf beaches have strong currents and marine hazards.
- Never feed dingoes, and keep food secured in your vehicle.
- Reception is patchy — carry offline maps and tell someone your plans.
